The Great Tampa Bay Rivalry
They’re neighbors.
They share Florida’s Gulf Coast.
They’re both part of the Tampa Bay area.
And depending on which side of the county line you live on, you’re probably convinced your county does at least a few things better.
We’re comparing beaches, traffic, downtowns, boating, growth, open space, things to do and everyday life to answer a question that will probably never actually be settled:
Which county wins?
Don’t worry. We love them both.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t make them compete. 😂
Welcome to the completely unofficial, mildly sarcastic and absolutely unnecessary battle of Pasco County vs. Pinellas County.
First, Meet the Competitors
PASCO COUNTY 🌴
Pasco County stretches from the Gulf of Mexico eastward into a very different side of Florida. Along the way you’ll find waterfront communities, historic towns, suburban neighborhoods, rapidly developing areas, ranchland, forests and plenty of reminders that parts of Pasco were pretty rural not all that long ago.
Communities include New Port Richey, Port Richey, Hudson, Holiday, Trinity, Odessa, Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel, Dade City and Zephyrhills, among many others.
Pasco’s personality?
Growing fast, a little more spread out, and still holding onto some Old Florida.
PINELLAS COUNTY 🌊
Pinellas County is a peninsula surrounded by Tampa Bay and the Gulf, which means water is pretty much part of the deal.
It’s home to St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor, Seminole, Pinellas Park and a string of Gulf beach communities.
Pinellas gives you beaches, established neighborhoods, waterfront towns, arts and culture, restaurants, tourism and some wonderfully walkable downtowns.
Pinellas’ personality?
Coastal, busy, established and very aware that it has beaches. 😂

LET THE BATTLE BEGIN.
ROUND 1
Who Has the Better Beaches?
We might as well get Pasco’s most difficult round out of the way first.
Pasco County has Gulf access, waterfront communities and some beautiful coastal areas of its own. Robert K. Rees Memorial Park—often called Green Key Beach—is a favorite local spot in New Port Richey, and the county’s coastline offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, paddling and boating.

Pinellas doesn’t just have beaches.

Pinellas has perfected the are of turning what looks like a quick trip on a map into a significant portion of your afternoon.
But Pasco residents
shouldn't laugh to hard. Try driving through parts of Wesley Chapel or Land O'Lakes during rush hour and you may have enough time sitting at traffic lights to reconsider several major life decisions.

That road doesn't recognize county rivalries

Pinellas County is densely developed. There are homes,condos, businesses, restaurants and shopping centers seemingly everywhere.
You can absolutely find larger properties on Pinellas- but land is at a premium.

Dade City brings entirely different experience with its historic downtown and small town character.

currently going through a massive growth spurt.

WhO WINS THE
BOATING & FISHING BATTLE?
Pinellas enters this round extremely confident.
St. Petersburg. Clearwater. Dunedin. Tarpon Springs. Safety Harbor. Gulfport. Beaches. Museums. Restaurants. Breweries. Festivals. Concerts. Parks. The Pier. Downtowns.
Basically, if you're bored in Pinellas County, Pinellas would like to point out that this may be a you problem.
Pasco:
“Hold on. We're working on it.”
And Pasco REALLY IS working on it.
Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes have exploded with restaurants, shopping, entertainment and development, while New Port Richey has spent years rebuilding a downtown that has become one of the county's best gathering spots.
Pasco is the younger sibling currently going through a growth spurt.
Remember when Pasco requested a separate boating category?
The judges have approved the request.
Now things get considerably more competitive.
Both counties have deep connections to the water, and both offer access
to some incredible boating and fishing.

Pasco:
Pinellas has marinas, boat ramps, the Intercoastal Waterway, Tampa Bay the Gulf, barrier islands and seemingly endless places to stop along the water.
You can spend the morning fishing, pull up somewhere for lunch and finish the day watching the sunset from the boat.
"We have more waterfront destinations."
"Yeah, but can you find somewhere to park the boat?"
This one could start an actual argument.
Pasco responds with its Gulf coastline, canals, rivers, waterfront communities and access to places that can feel considerably less crowded.
Head out from Western Pasco and suddenly the suburban neighborhoods disappear behind you Your looking at open Gulf water, mangroves, islands and Florida coastline.

Pasco and Pinellas both have downtowns — they’re just at different stages of the relationship.
😂 Pinellas is already dressed, downtown and ordering appetizers.
Pasco is still getting ready, but keeps yelling, “DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT ME!”

St. Petersburg alone brings restaurants, museums, nightlife, waterfront parks, shopping, events and the St. Pete Pier.

But we're judging the counties right now, not 10 years from now
PASCO isn't going down without a fight!
Downtown New Port Richey has experienced a resurgence with restaurants, breweries, nightlife, parks and community events.
Dade City brings historic architecture, local shops and a completely different small town Florida atmosphere.
Pasco Immediately filed an appeal based on future development.
ROUND 7
WhICH COUNTY GIVES YOU
MORE HOUSE FOR THE MONEY?
Pinellas has some fantastic neighborhoods.
The problem?
Everybody else knows that too.
Waterfront locations, limited land and established communities can make real estate in desirable parts of Pinellas expensive.
Pasco has historically offered buyers more opportunities to get additional space for their money, particularly farther inland.
Larger houses.
Newer communities.
Bigger lots in some areas.
Sometimes even a three car garage without having to sell one of your kidneys.

old florida charm?
If Pasco County had an official bird, there are days when it feels like it should be...

Drive through Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, Trinity or Odessa after not visiting for a while and you may find yourself saying:
“Wait... wasn’t that a field?”
Yes.
Yes, it was.
Pasco has experienced enormous residential and commercial development as Tampa Bay’s population has pushed farther north.
New neighborhoods, shopping centers, schools, restaurants and businesses continue appearing across the county.
Pinellas County has a different problem.
It’s already highly developed.

“We’d build more.”

“So why don’t you?”

GROWING FASTER?
Pasco has been waiting patiently for this round.
Actually...
No it hasn't.
Pasco is too busy building something. 😂
Drive through Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, Odessa and other rapidly developing parts of the county and there's a decent chance you'll see:
A new subdivision.
A new shopping center.
A new restaurant.
A road being widened.
Another subdivision.
And a sign announcing something else that's COMING SOON.
Pinellas is still changing and redeveloping, but much of the county is already heavily built out.
Pasco still has room for major new development.
ROUND 10
Who Has the Better Personality?
Now we’re asking for trouble. 😂
Pasco and Pinellas may be neighbors, but they definitely have two very different personalities. One brings the coastal lifestyle, downtowns, beaches and hidden waterfront favorites. The other brings boats in the driveway, backyard grills, wide-open spaces and enough construction projects to keep everyone guessing what’s coming next.
So instead of trying to explain it ourselves, we figured we’d let Pasco and Pinellas speak for themselves.
